Creative Journal (2)

Personally, I believe the best way to learn anything is by doing. There will always be times to read or listen or discuss in a classroom, but everything can become hands on in one way or another. Not only is this way I learn best but is also one of the best ways students in the classroom will learn. Thinking outside the classroom and in the out-of-doors students are able to gain a deeper understanding for the environment and how humans impact in ways that cause climate change.
It’s no secret that humans are taking more from the planet than we give back, and at this rate we are going to crash and burn. As teachers it is our responsibility to teach students that there are consequences to our actions and what consequences we are creating by overusing natural resources. The fact is, we are destroying the planet with our actions and it will take time to repair the damage we have done. However, as educators we have the power to inform future generations not just what is happening but also how to change and in turn fix it.
“But the very place of outdoor education—the outdoors, the land—bears a heavy imprint of colonization both in its histories of land cessions and in the dominant discourses through which wilderness space is so often imagined (as neutral, natural, and empty).” (P. 30) This quote calls out to me having spent so much of my life growing up camping and spending time in (what I consider) the wilderness. Learning the history of a place and creating your own memories with the same land that has seen so much helps one form a connection with the environment. Helping students form these connections will help them with their understanding and in turn connect their learnings in school to their everyday life.
Although we currently on the path to unsustainable planet by overusing resources, we have the power to inform students about the necessary changes as teachers.


For my visual I did a painting that is “cut in half” with the left side showing the beautiful world if you are able to form a connection with the environment. Meanwhile on the left side is the same world but has grey over it, shadowing your understanding and taking away from the beauty similar to not having that connection.

    I completely agree that getting students outdoors to learn is one of the best ways we as teachers can help students get excited to learn. I also think that there are so many underlying meanings that students can learn from, such as, First Nations culture and colonization, and also caring for the environment, like you have mentioned. I think that there are so many important reasons to get students outdoors, but I find that sometimes it’s hard to fit it into the curriculum.
